BALTIMORE — A day after his 23rd birthday, Gunnar Henderson delivered some Texas-sized news on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.
The Orioles star shortstop will compete in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby on July 15 at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
Henderson announced his upcoming Derby appearance while on the mic during the third inning of the O’s Series finale against the Rangers at Camden Yards. He is the first known home run hitter in the eight-batter category, and this will be his first appearance in the marquee event.
“This is going to be my first competition ever, so I’m just looking to be competitive. I mean, obviously I’m going to win it,” Henderson said on ESPN. “But yeah, as long as I can put on competitive events, I’ll be happy.”
It’s a well-deserved honor for Henderson, who was among the MLB’s best home run hitters during the first half of his stellar sophomore campaign.
Henderson’s 26 home runs are tied for second in the Majors with the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani, behind Yankees slugger Aaron Judge (31). Henderson’s power took a big step forward in 2024, as he entered the year with 32 home runs in his first 184 MLB games – 28 of those long balls during his NFL-winning campaign. American League Rookie of the Year in ’23.
Given the opportunity to participate in the Home Run Derby, Henderson didn’t have a difficult decision to make.
“I watched that growing up, and it was something that seemed really cool. To have this opportunity is really special,” Henderson said after the Orioles’ 11-2 loss to the Rangers on Sunday night. “So I’m looking forward to it.” »
Henderson has not yet decided who he will present to him at the Derby.

“We’ve had some good performances on the Orioles side since I’ve been here with (Trey) Mancini (the 2021 finalist) and then Rutsch last year putting on a show,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “So hopefully Gunnar can do something similar.”
