The U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials conclude tonight as Simone Biles learns who else will join her on the team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Biles edged out Jordan Chiles and Sunisa Lee after Friday’s competition. But Shilese Jones (knee), Kayla DiCello (Achilles) and Skye Blakely (Achilles) all suffered injuries, throwing the five-woman team into disarray.
USA TODAY Sports’ Nancy Armor and Tom Schad will provide live updates, results, highlights and analysis throughout the gymnastics trials. Follow.
Simone Biles outclasses Yurchenko in double pike jump
Simone Biles simply has more talent than everyone else, as she showed with her Yurchenko double pike jump. It’s so difficult that few men attempt it, and yet Biles gets so much height and power that she went over the edge and had to run backwards. She got a 15.5, down from the first night of testing, but she’s still likely to be one of the few scores above 15 of the night.

Suni Lee on bars receives a standing ovation
As if it wasn’t already obvious, Suni Lee can join Simone Biles in her Paris preparation. Lee made a splash with her routine on the uneven bars, her favorite event, and had the home crowd roaring with every release she made. More impressive? She had struggled to warm up just minutes before. A big smile spread across Lee’s face after she finished, and the crowd gave her a standing ovation as she left the podium.
The judges were also impressed, giving him a score of 14.875. That moved her into second place behind Biles, whose place in the Paris team has been all but assured since her return.

Shilese Jones injury at Olympic trials: What you need to know
Shilese Jones injured her knee on a vault during pre-competition warm-ups Friday night and had to forfeit all events except the uneven bars. USA Gymnastics said the decision not to compete Sunday was made after it was reevaluated Saturday.
Jones had established herself almost as much of a lock for the Paris team as Simone Biles, winning all-around medals at the last two world championships. She arrived at the trials nursing a shoulder injury that kept her out of the national championships earlier this month, but coach Sarah Korngold said she was ready to compete.
But on Friday, during warm-ups, Jones missed her jump and fell to the mat, clutching her right leg. Biles ran to check on her, and Jones sat on the podium for several minutes before being helped backstage by Korngold and a medical staffer.
Suni Lee’s Health Journey and How It Changed Her Mindset
Suni Lee is in good shape to make the five-person U.S. team for the Paris Olympics. She finished fourth at the national championships in early June and has since improved her routines on the uneven bars and floor. But a health scare 15 months ago — she developed a kidney disease that caused her to retain so much fluid she couldn’t even put her handgrips on — upended her life. There were days when she couldn’t even get out of bed.
Lee said a phone call she received on Jan. 4, the details of which she wished to keep private, was a turning point for her. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going back to the gym tomorrow and I’m going to be better than I’ve ever been.’ That was the day I was like, ‘Yes, this is what I want.’ And I’m going to think about it,” she said. Simone Biles’ Floor Routine Catches Taylor Swift’s Attention
Pop superstar Taylor Swift responded to a social media post regarding Simone Biles’ floor routine Friday night, which included Swift’s “Ready For It.”
Simone Biles’s Jump: Watch for Her Yurchenko Double Pike
Simone Biles got a standing ovation from fans for her Yurchenko double pike on Friday. No matter how many times she does it, it’s still mind-blowing to see it in person. Biles gets incredible height on the jump, and the power it takes to do it practically spills over her as she flips. She had to take a step to control the landing, but that’s just nitpicking. The judges clearly agreed, giving her a score of 15.975, including a 9.75 for execution.
How many Olympic Games has he had Simone Biles went to ?
Biles participated in two editions of the Summer Olympics: the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. However, she only competed in some of the events scheduled for 2021 after suffering from “twisties” syndrome, which caused her to lose track of where she was in the air, putting at risk jeopardizes his physical safety.
How many gold medals does Simone Biles have?
Simone Biles has won four Olympic gold medals, all at the 2016 Rio Games. She led the Final Five to team gold, won individual all-around gold, and won two of the four individual events: floor exercise and vault. She also won a silver medal (in the 2021 team competition) and two Olympic bronzes on balance beam in 2016 and 2021.
What happened to Kayla DiCello?
Kayla DiCello injured her Achilles tendon on the first vault Friday, leaving the track in a wheelchair and USA Gymnastics announced she would not compete for the rest of the night.
Jordan Chiles: What you need to know
The Tokyo Olympian made her mark at the US Classic with a solid showing in all four events. Chiles may not give the U.S. a huge score in any given event, but she doesn’t leave any holes either.
“I think I realized I had the potential,” Chiles said of the difference between this season and last, when she struggled to transition from the NCAA to the elite.
“Most of the time you say you want to do something and you never know what’s going to happen because there’s a lot of attention and expectations on you,” Chiles added. “When you put that aside, you realize, ‘I’m just going to go out there and be the person I need to be and put the effort I need into every workout.’”

Simone Biles Netflix show: what you need to know
Netflix recently released the trailer for “Simone Biles: Rising” and announced that the four-part documentary series will premiere July 17, nine days before the opening ceremony. “Rising” follows Biles’ return to competition after a case of “slap syndrome” forced her to withdraw from most of the Tokyo Games.
Simone BIles leotard
Here’s a look at her leotards over the years.
When do the Summer Olympics start?
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will begin with the opening ceremony on July 26. The gymnastics competition will begin on July 27 with the men’s qualifications. The women’s qualifiers will take place on July 28.
Who is Simone Biles’ husband?
Simone Biles is married to NFL player Jonathan Owens, who is currently a safety for the Chicago Bears. They celebrated their first wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Simone Biles is guaranteed to be at the Olympics. But after her injuries, who will join her?
Call it carnage, chaos or just plain bad luck, the four women joining Simone Biles at the Paris Olympics may well be the ones healthy enough to make the trip.
In Friday night’s 30 minutes, Shilese Jones suffered a knee injury that limited her to just one event and Kayla DiCello was scratched with an Achilles injury. Meanwhile, Skye Blakely, a member of the U.S. teams that won gold at the last two world championships, was limping on the ground on crutches due to a ruptured Achilles tendon that occurred during practice two days earlier.
What makes this situation so devastating, on top of all that, is that the U.S. women’s team seemed, if not ready, to be in very strong form after the national championships four weeks ago. And now everything is turned upside down.
Nancy Armour explains what all these injuries mean for Team USA.
